Utica, an Aunt, a barking dog and a Birthday!

After leaving Lake Placid we descended down the “mountains” towards Utica, NY. The ride was absolutley great! Started in a downpour and continued to get better as the day rolled on. We visited Dave’s Aunt Carol Anne who served us lunch. A great lunch I might add. When we arrived at Carol Ann’s we all overshot the driveway so Teresa wisely turned into a neighbors driveway to turn around. Little did she know that an extremely big black dog with huge teeth would show it face!! Needless to say Teresa’s bike was “gently” laid down. A few bruises and twisted knee and and of course bruised pride, and she was up! A REAL trooper!!!
We left after a great lunch and headed towards Rochester and found a hotel. It was Dave’s Birthday so we got a cake and shared it with all the hotel staff. Dave is still recovering from having to blow out all those candles!!!

Lake Placid and a Ski Jump

After a number of detours due the damage in Vermont we made it to Lake Placid. It is hard to imagine how a town with limited road access was able to support two very successful winter Olympics. A neat little town, albeit somewhat of a tourist trap. I wanted to take a full frame picture of the Olympic Ski Jump, but $7.00 just to look just didn’t seem right. Once we left Lake Placid we headed west. The roads were great!!!

A Castle in the Clouds and a lake!

What a great day! We got up this morning and headed to Moultonborough, NH to the Castle in the Coulds. This home was built in 1914 at a cost of 1.3 Million dollars! Mr Thomas Plant built his home which was called Lucknow Estate, overlooking beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee . He was a true Rags to Riches to Rags story.
We then headed for a friends home on Lake Winnipesaukee for a visit. I was Kimball Packard’s Best Man in 1975. Kimball and I have kept in touch often over the years but I also saw some people I hadn’t seen in 37 years! It was GREAT!

Gloucester, The Inn and More Tails

We spent another great night at The Linden Tree Inn and of course we had more Lobster for dinner!!! When the lobster is 4.99 per pound it is had to pass up!!! Riding into Goucester you can help but look back in history and the life of the “Long Liners”. The Fishermans Memorial” is truly amazing. During the years before the advent of dependable weather forecasting the number of deaths at sea was incredible. The McDonald family alone has lost 132 family members due to storms in the North Atlantic.
A great place to visit, but we had to move on. We left Goucester and are now in Woodstock, New Hampshire. This part of New Hampshire received a tremendous amount of rain from Irene. Fortunately we have not had to detour too much, but the damage from flooding and rushing water is very evident.

Rockport, the Inn and some Tails!

We had a great ride to Rockport, Mass and arrive at the Linden Tree Inn(www.lindentreeinn.com) The weather is great and the ocean is calling!! And of course you cannot come to New England and not indulge a couple of Lobsters!! This little spot on the New England coast is absolutely beautiful.

Gettysburg to Bethel to Hamden with a side of Chocolate!

We left Gettysburg and made our way to Hershey, PA. Ah, the great smell of chocolate and the Hershey Kiss street lights! An added bonus was that we were able to see my cousin Beth Reese and she opened her store, Quilters Cottage, for us. Of course Nancy and Teresa made it worth her while!!
We left Hershey and rode to Bethel, Connecticut to Dave and Nancy’s daughter Lynda. We visited and then rode to Hamden, Connecticut to spend the night at Dave and Nancy’s other daughter Barbara. Ahhhh, to sleep in a real bed!!! What great daughters and family Dave and Nancy have!!!

Historic Battlefields and many Generals

We decided to stay two nights in Gettysburg to allow that “women” to head north. We visited the Gettysburg National Cemetary and just took in some of the MANY historical sights. We stayed in a cabin so we did have some solid cover from the weather. We were going to tent camp, but Irene convinced us to stay in a KOA cabin which turned out to be a smart decision.

A Great General

US Route 60 is a great road, especially on motorcycles. However it slowed us down so we only made it to Staunton, VA. We finally found a room as all the Viginia coast residents have headed west. We found a room at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel. A grand old building(with a grand room price!!!)
We are headed up to Gettysburg and should escape most of the rain, but tomorrow will be another story.

In Grayson, Kentucky

Dave, Nancy, Teresa and I made our way to Grayson, KY and had great weather. We will be heading to Harpers Ferry, WV in the morning. The weather on Friday is looking good, but we know that it is going down hill after that.
